OUR HISTORY

Coalville and District Male Voice Choir started in 1944

We are proud of our long heritage of providing music, community and entertainment to the people of Coalville and surrounding areas

Our history

The founding members knew that forming a male voice choir would be a great way to connect with men coming back from fighting the war, and providing them with a new sense of purpose and joy. Ernest Evans was appointed chairman and Harry Toon conductor.

In the early years, the choir performed at many festivals and concerts across the Midlands. In the 1970s the choir, under the direction of Les Anderson following the passing of Harry, the choir recorded performances for the BBC.

Our musical directors

Aubrey Ward was the next musical director from 1980 for 25 years.

From 2005 onwards, Cynthia Moseley was musical director and Tom King accompanist. During this time the choir was privileged to sing for HRH Princess Royal at the opening of the Burton upon Trent Brewing Museum.

2010-2020

In 2010, the choir changed its name to Coalville Male Voice Choir.

Following Cynthia’s resignation due to poor health, Dr Georgie Lorimer, a local singing tutor, took over as musical director in 2017.

In 2020, our live performances were cut short due to the Covid19 pandemic. It was at this time that Georgie resigned as musical director, due to other commitments.  We had to reassess how we could continue practising as a choir. Since July we have been using Zoom to rehearse remotely and reconnect with each other.

In October 2020 we welcomed two new  musical directors, Paul Hayward and Anna Hill. Both bring a plethora of experience into the choir and we very much look forward to working with them in 2021. Paul will take up the position of MD for the Male Voice Choir and Anna will be responsible for the inception and running of a youth choir created under the auspices of CMVC.

In December, a small group of us were thrilled to perform Christmas carols for local care homes, Tillson House and The Rowans.
